Policies

Library Users

The following categories of people are allowed to use the library:

  • Students and staff of Don Bosco Utume College
  • Authorized students from our Inter-Library service partners (CUEA, Tangaza, Marist, Apostles of Jesus, Chemichemi, Contemplative Evangelizers, Hekima College, Consolata Institute of Philosophy and Theology, St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary, and African Jesuits Aids Network)
  • Alumni of Don Bosco Utume College

Checking In and Out of the Library

All bags must be deposited at the circulation desk. Please allow library staff to check books you are carrying out. Any materials taken out must be registered at the circulation desk.

Library Loaning

  • Books: Students and part-time lecturers can borrow up to 5 books for 14 days, renewable when not on demand. Full-time lecturers can borrow 6 books for a month.
  • Audio Visuals: Up to 2 items (e.g., CDs, DVDs) can be borrowed for 1 week.
  • Penalty: Late returns are fined at Ksh 10 per item per day. Damaged or lost materials must be replaced in consultation with the acquisition librarian.

Note: Reference books, periodicals, and materials on reserve cannot be loaned but may be photocopied upon request.

Library Classification and Catalogue System

The library uses the Library of Congress system of Classification (OPAC). It is recommended to use the Online Public Access Catalogue for accurate and up-to-date information. Materials from partner institutions are also available via the Utume Library system.

Library Etiquette

  • Re-shelving: Do not replace books on shelves; leave them on designated tables to avoid misplacement.
  • Silence: Maintain silence in the library. Phones should be on silent mode or switched off.
  • Cleanliness: Dispose of unwanted papers in dustbins. Food and drinks are not allowed.

Periodicals and New Books

  • Current issues of periodicals are displayed on the display unit. Older issues are stored in the periodicals section.
  • New books are showcased on the display unit. Students and lecturers can recommend new books to the librarian or principal.

Library Computers

These computers are exclusively for academic research and accessing the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC).

  • Monday to Thursday: 8:00 AM - 1:30 PM and 2:30 PM - 5:00 PM
  • Friday: 8:00 AM - 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM
  • Saturday: 8:00 AM - 1:00 PM
